but now that it is time to actually really seriously get down to business about this I am so undecided and I don't know what I want--- ahhhhhh--- well I know what I want but I don't know all at the same time :) My ideas and likes have changed over the years and this is a home that I am going to be living YEARS in and I'm a little worried about the changes in life, for instance- right now my kids want to be close to me but I'm sure as teens they are going to want to be far from mom and dads room as possible-- and the other thing is is I do not, do not, do not, want a big big house. I don't like them I don't like vaulted ceilings and wasted space and don't like having a dining room that you eat in only once or twice a year- I don't need a gourmet kitchen cuz' hey I sure am not a gourmet cook I just want a moderate sized comfortable (warm and inviting) home :)
I know I like the craftsman bungalow outside style of a home-- with the big porches and the top stories built into the roof-- {my hubby still shakes his head over this but I love the look of older homes I just don't so much like the oldness of older homes :)}
I also know that I really really would like a white kitchen with wood accents and a bar island-- these pictures make me swoon looking at them-- I probably wouldn't have my kitchen as big as some of these but ya their yummy
I know I want a mudroom/command center area--of course -- I think I'd die without one
and I want lots of details and bookcases ect.
and for complete randomness I really really want a blue door like this :)
See I know some things :) but some of the things I have ?'s with is.............
~ would you ever have your kids sleep on a different level than you when they're young
~ If you have a family room on your main floor and one in your basement doesn't one of them pretty much become neglected and just more of a formal room kinda wasted space? or do you love having two of them
~ and a desk in the kitchen-- Love need Hate?
and my Uncles favorite quotation "Opinions are like butt cracks- everyone has one" So I'm inviting you to share them-- not so much your cracks though- you can spare me and you the embarresment- but your opinions-- I really want to know--
What would you be putting in your dream house?
{ps. I have no rights to any of these pictures and sadly I don't know where I got them from they've just been randomly collected over the years and put in my house inspiration file-- so if they're yours and you want credit just tell me and I'll add it}
I completely agree - the look of older houses is so much better than what they have right now, IMO. I hope you can get that look for your new house. I am all for the formal living room and then the family room w/tv. We are buying our first house and I will use the formal lr as a sitting/music/fhe room that shuts out the world. Love your kitchen ideas! I might steal some! If/when we have a second child I would consider having them both go downstairs once the older one is ready - like 4 or 5 or so. I would have a hard time at first, but if the dog were down there with them, I'd feel better. Kitchen with a desk - utter awesome luxury!

ReplyDeleteThe architect is great about addressing what is really important in a house and like you doesn't like the vaulted ceilings and such in homes that she calls "starter castles". Her books are usually in the library and really worth checking out. Good luck!
laundry room with enough space to put two dryers! That is my dream laundry room, and I also want a hanging rod so I can hang those types of clothes right out of the dryer rather than have them risk getting wrinkled again in the baskets. How fun for you! Goodluck!
ReplyDeleteOh and a walk-in pantry.
I love your style and can't wait to see what you end up with!! We just built our first home and moved in a year ago. Unfortunately, we were pretty limited in what we could choose. (We came into the process when the framing was done).
ReplyDeleteI'm not a huge fan of two living room areas. We have one in this house and we spend most of our time in the basement and our main level living room is neglected. Now, a playroom and living room might be another matter.
One thing I always wanted to put in my own home...and we did, was slow-close kitchen drawers. They are the best. Kids can slam the drawers and they just close soft and slow. Also love having a tall, double sink vanity in the master bath and two shower heads in the master shower.
A walk-in pantry for sure!!
We built a mini-kitchenette in our basement. I love having a sink, mini-fridge and some snack food (popcorn) stored where we hang out. Very convenient.
That is so fun! I love your ideas. Just thought I would add my two cents. I LOVE LOVE LOVE our kitchen desk, we have some drawers that are big enough for files and they are awesome for keeping bills, reciepts and all that other clutter off the counter. My other kitchen fav. is the pull out garbage. In our laundry room, we have a recessed ironing board closet thing..love that. I couldn't imaginge life without our half bath off the kitchen. It is easy to keep clean for visitors and it gets used all the time. Things I'm not so fond of...small mud room area, go big on that one, kids shoes and junk add up way too fast. The doors to our closets are the swing out types. I hate them, they look nice, but you know kids...they never get shut and they take up too much space in the bedrooms. Go for the double bypass. We are finishing our basement and putting those kind down there.
ReplyDeleteI am excited for you, I'm sure it will be amazing-like everything else you lay a finger on :)
I love, love, love craftsman style homes. I dream about them as my *dream* home daily. I'm with you on the no formal dining room. Just want a good sized area to fit a good sized table. And I think I'd love to have the 2 tv rooms (and no formal room). One upstairs where we would enjoy being and one in a rec room downstairs where all the kids play things would be (and eventually their *hangout* room). Then we could go downstairs and watch too when they want to play *with us* without them bringing up every. single. toy. they. own. But we also like to watch tv. Alot. :) And a big mudroom. Absolute must. The bedrooms I still would want all together, even when the kids are older. I'd like my separation (ie, putting our room on one end with the bathrooms, closets, etc in between), but I still want to be close, or at least they have to go by our room to get downstairs/out (or as disturbing as this is, someone would have to get by our room first...yes, I worry about that stuff too much...). But even when they're teenagers and whatnot, I still want to *know* when they get home and stuff. Would love to have all the built-ins and little nooks here and there. And moldings. Oh, to have moldings...and wood floors. But for me, I want a gigantic kitchen. Want it white, but big. With built in appliances (no having to move them out to clean). And all open to the dining and living room. And a study if possible. (Well, really a craft room.) Oh and with the mudroom, I'd love a 3/4 or full bath. I hate dragging my dirty kids through the house and upstairs. Plus it'd be nice to have a shower or bath downstairs to clean off plants and trashcans and other big stuff. Or even just dirty feet. And split stairs. Like those pictures. Makes falls (for little or big people) a little less traumatic. And even when your kids are older, chances are you'll still have little ones over from time to time.
ReplyDeleteOh, I could go on and on and on.
Just a tad bit jealous...;)
ha ha, I just got a error that said my comment was too large to process...guess I really did go on and on... But, hey it posted anyway!
ReplyDeleteI've been drawing up dreamhouse plans lately (for fun, we're not really to that stage yet ;)) and one of my main desires would be a kitchen/living/dining room all in one where I could make dinner while the kids/husband talk or watch a movie (and I can watch too). I just love the idea of being able to be together while doing totally different projects, not letting work or chores make you seperate, you know? And at the center of all this I want your farmhouse table :D Yeah, that all sounds good to me.
ReplyDeleteAhh I love that you have put so much planning into your house. I have a "dream" book when I put all my ideas and things I love. It looks like we have similar taste in style. You are much closer to your dream house ;) I'm jealous :D
